Visit Les Saintes Maries de la Mer : Capital of the Camargue
It is a Provencal town, a place of pilgrimage and a coastal resort in the department of Les Bouches du Rhone. In area it is the second largest commune in mainland France, after ARLES
During the festival season in summer the town presents a programme of traditional Camargue sports and activities. So you can experience an « abrivado » , where the bulls run through the streets accompanied by skilled and experienced horsemen and women. Children can have fun on the bouncy castle, parents can explore the narrow streets, often with musical accompaniment, or visit the crypt of Saint Sarah. For 8 to 10 days, around the 24th May, the gypsies celebrate their patron saint, Sarah, with a procession and the baptism of children.
In the restaurants you can try local dishes including bull meat, Camargue rice or a simple Paella.
There are long walks and rambles by the sea on the dike or to the lighthouse at la Gacholle either on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. For further information :
